Investment Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (15 Years)

Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This investment version uses a 15-year planning term as its starting point.

—

Interpretation: the Monthly deposit figure is the fixed amount to save every month for 15 years, or 180 monthly deposits, at the annual rate entered, so that those deposits plus assumed growth reach the goal amount; a lower real rate would leave the same monthly deposit short of the goal, and missing deposits would leave it shorter still.

Formula

Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.

How it works

Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.

Worked example

Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 15 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 15 times 12, which is 180 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 180, minus one, which gives $187.06 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults. Over the term the deposits total $33671.43, so growth covers $16328.57 of the $50,000 goal. Without any interest the same goal would need $277.78 a month, so interest saves about $90.71 a month on average at the assumed rate. The 5% rate is only the entered assumption; a lower real average return would leave the same deposit short of the goal.

Who this term suits for an investor: an investor building a fund for a mid-life goal, such as a franchise stake, an early-retirement bridge fund, or a bigger position in a chosen market — 15 years gives compounding real room, but the goal itself should be revisited as income and prices change.

FAQs

How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.

Is this investment calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why is the 15-year deposit only $187.06 a month?
Because 180 months of compounding do much of the work: deposits total $33,671.43 and growth covers $16,328.57, so the monthly burden falls sharply compared with a 5-year plan.

Is a 15-year investment plan too long to trust one rate?
Yes, if it is never reviewed: 5% is only the entered assumption, so recheck the deposit every year or two and adjust for real returns, fees and changing goals.

What happens if I pause deposits during a market downturn?
The goal slips: missed deposits lose both the money and its future compounding, so a pause usually means a higher deposit later or a later finish date.
