Investment Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (10 Years)
Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This investment version uses a 10-year planning term as its starting point.
Interpretation: the Monthly deposit figure is the fixed amount to save every month for 10 years, or 120 monthly deposits, at the annual rate entered, so that those deposits plus assumed growth reach the goal amount; a lower real rate would leave the same monthly deposit short of the goal, and missing deposits would leave it shorter still.
Formula
Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.
How it works
Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.
Worked example
Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 10 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 10 times 12, which is 120 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 120, minus one, which gives $321.99 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults. Over the term the deposits total $38639.31, so growth covers $11360.69 of the $50,000 goal. Without any interest the same goal would need $416.67 a month, so interest saves about $94.67 a month on average at the assumed rate. The 5% rate is only the entered assumption; a lower real average return would leave the same deposit short of the goal.
Who this term suits for an investor: an investor saving toward a medium-term goal, such as a second property deposit, a child's education fund held in investments, or a larger portfolio allocation in about 10 years — the deposit is manageable, but the plan still needs regular review if returns fall short.
FAQs
How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.
Is this investment calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Is $321.99 a month realistic for a 10-year investment goal?
For many investors it is: $321.99 a month for 120 months totals $38,639.31 of deposits, with growth covering the remaining $11,360.69 of the $50,000 goal at the assumed 5%.
What does the $11,360.69 of growth actually mean here?
It is the part of the $50,000 goal not paid in by the investor — interest and returns compounding on regular deposits, not a separate payment and not a guaranteed profit.
Should an investor raise the deposit if returns lag over 10 years?
Yes, review it yearly: if the average return runs below 5%, the deposit must rise or the term must lengthen, otherwise the goal will not be reached on time.
