Investment Effective Annual Rate Calculator (25 Years)
Convert a nominal annual rate to an effective annual rate. This investment version uses a 25-year planning term as its starting point.
The Effective annual rate is the true yearly rate after compounding within the year, so it sits above the nominal rate whenever interest is added more than once a year, and it lets you compare offers with different compounding frequencies on equal terms.
Formula
Effective rate equals one plus nominal rate divided by periods, to the power of periods, minus one.
How it works
More frequent compounding raises the effective rate slightly above the nominal rate.
Worked example
Nominal rate 6%, compounding periods 12 per year, term 25 years. Using the page formula, the effective annual rate is one plus 6 divided by 100 divided by 12, to the power of 12, minus one, which is 6.17% a year. That is the calculator's own result for these defaults under the stated formula, and it is the same on every page in this group because the term is not an input. On a $10,000 investment balance, 6% nominal compounded monthly earns $616.78 of interest in one year, not $600, because each month's interest joins the balance and earns interest itself.
As an illustration only, not the output of this page: if that 6.17% effective rate held every year for 25 years, $10,000 would grow to $44,673.03, a gain of $34,673.03. Real investment returns change, fees apply, and an investment balance is usually added to or withdrawn from during the term, so the illustration is a planning comparison, not a forecast.
Who this term suits for an investor: an investor comparing long mortgages or investment loans before a 25-year commitment, where comparing effective rates first avoids paying more than the headline rate suggests.
FAQs
What is an effective rate?
The effective rate is the true yearly rate after allowing for compounding during the year.
Is this investment calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why compare effective rates before a 25-year investment loan?
Because a loan quoted at 6% nominal with monthly compounding really costs 6.17% a year, and over 25 years that difference adds thousands to the total paid.
Does a 25-year illustration at 6.17% include investment fees and taxes?
No, it is a clean illustration only; real funds charge fees and real gains may be taxed, so the amount an investor keeps is lower.
How often should a 25-year investor recheck the rate?
At least once a year, and whenever the lender or fund changes its nominal rate, its compounding frequency, or its fees.
Estimates only, not financial advice. Figures are approximate and do not include all fees, taxes, or changing rates unless stated.
