Home Simple Interest Total Calculator (15 Years)

Calculate simple interest and the total amount to repay. This home version uses a 15-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Interest figure is the total extra cost over the full term, and the Total figure is the original principal plus that interest, which is the full amount to repay by the end of the 15-year term.

Formula

Simple interest equals principal times rate times time, divided by 100.

How it works

Interest is charged only on the original principal, not on interest already added.

Worked example

Principal $10,000, annual rate 5%, term 15 years. Using the page formula, simple interest equals $10,000 times 5 times 15, divided by 100, which is $7,500.00. The total amount to repay is $10,000 plus $7,500.00, which is $17,500.00. That is the calculator's own result for these defaults. Simple interest adds the same $500 every year, so the interest grows in a straight line: 15 years times $500 is $7,500.00.

Who this term suits for a home household: a home household planning a larger project, such as a home extension, a loft conversion, or a full heating-system replacement, over about 15 years, where the loan outlasts most appliances and fittings bought with it.

FAQs

What is simple interest?
Simple interest is interest charged only on the original amount, not on accumulated interest.

Is this home calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Is $7,500 of interest over 15 years too much for a home extension?
It is three quarters of the $10,000 borrowed, at $500 a year. An extension that adds lasting living space may justify it, but a short-lived purchase, such as furniture or a single appliance, rarely does over 15 years.

Does simple interest stay simple for the whole 15 years?
Only if the rate, the principal, and the terms never change. A variable rate, a top-up loan, or missed payments can change the real cost, so recheck the agreement if anything changes during the 15 years.

Should a 15-year home plan use this page or a compound page?
Use this page when the lender charges simple interest. If the loan compounds, even monthly, the total will be higher than $17,500, so do not use this figure to judge a compound loan.
