Home Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (20 Years)
Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This home version uses a 20-year planning term as its starting point.
The Monthly deposit figure is the fixed amount to set aside every month, at the entered annual rate, so that the monthly deposits plus the interest they earn add up to the goal amount by the end of the 20-year term.
Formula
Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.
How it works
Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.
Worked example
Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 20 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 20 times 12, which is 240 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 240, minus one, which gives $121.64 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults.
Over 240 months the household itself deposits $29,194.69, and interest adds $20,805.31 to reach the $50,000 goal. Without interest the same goal would need $208.33 a month, so interest saves about $86.69 a month. Over 20 years interest covers more than two fifths of the goal, and the monthly deposit is less than a sixth of the 5-year figure. All figures are nominal, before fees and taxes, and are planning estimates, not promises of any rate or final amount. The 5% rate is only the entered assumption; a lower real average rate would leave the same deposit short of the goal.
Who this term suits for a home household: a home household saving across two decades, such as building a fund to clear part of a mortgage early, pay for a major structural renovation, or move to a home that suits retirement in about 20 years.
FAQs
How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.
Is this home calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
How can $121.64 a month reach $50,000 in 20 years?
Because 240 monthly deposits at 5% compound for up to 20 years. The household deposits $29,194.69 itself, and interest adds $20,805.31 to reach $50,000. Without interest the same goal would need $208.33 a month, so interest saves about $86.69 a month over 20 years.
Does a 20-year home goal survive a move to a different house?
The savings survive, but the goal may not. A household that moves may need the money for a different purpose — a new deposit, new furnishings, or repairs in the new home — so the $50,000 target should be rechecked at the move rather than carried on unchanged.
Is 5% a safe rate to assume for 20 years?
No single rate is safe to assume for 20 years. Five percent is only the entered assumption on this page. If the real average rate is lower, $121.64 a month will fall short of $50,000, so the household should check progress regularly and be ready to raise the deposit.
