Home Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (15 Years)
Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This home version uses a 15-year planning term as its starting point.
The Monthly deposit figure is the fixed amount to set aside every month, at the entered annual rate, so that the monthly deposits plus the interest they earn add up to the goal amount by the end of the 15-year term.
Formula
Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.
How it works
Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.
Worked example
Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 15 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 15 times 12, which is 180 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 180, minus one, which gives $187.06 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults.
Over 180 months the household itself deposits $33,671.43, and interest adds $16,328.57 to reach the $50,000 goal. Without interest the same goal would need $277.78 a month, so interest saves about $90.72 a month. Over 15 years interest covers nearly a third of the goal, so a much smaller monthly deposit still reaches the same $50,000. All figures are nominal, before fees and taxes, and are planning estimates, not promises of any rate or final amount. The 5% rate is only the entered assumption; a lower real average rate would leave the same deposit short of the goal.
Who this term suits for a home household: a home household planning a major home improvement, such as a loft conversion, new windows and doors, or a full kitchen refit in about 15 years, where a steady, smaller deposit works only if it is kept up through years when home bills are high.
FAQs
How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.
Is this home calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why is the 15-year deposit only $187.06 a month?
Because 180 monthly deposits at 5% give interest far more time to compound. The household deposits $33,671.43 itself, and interest adds $16,328.57 to reach $50,000. Without interest the same goal would need $277.78 a month, so interest saves about $90.72 a month over 15 years.
Is a 15-year home savings plan too long to trust?
It is long enough that the goal, the rate, and the household will all change, so it should be treated as a direction, not a fixed promise. Reviewing the deposit and the goal every year or two, and raising the deposit when income rises, keeps a 15-year home plan realistic.
What happens if I skip deposits when home bills are high?
Skipped deposits cost more than the missed month, because that money also misses years of compounding. A household that skips several deposits in bad years will need larger later deposits to still reach $50,000, so it is better to lower the deposit temporarily than to stop altogether.
