Home Retirement Corpus Calculator (20 Years)

Estimate a retirement corpus from monthly savings. This home version uses a 20-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Future value result is the total retirement pot built from your monthly savings plus the interest earned on them over 20 years, so it is larger than the deposits paid in alone and it represents the amount available at retirement if the saving rate and return stay the same.

Formula

Corpus uses the monthly rate and number of monthly savings to grow each saving with interest.

How it works

Starting earlier matters more than saving a little more later, because interest has longer to compound.

Worked example

Monthly saving $500, annual rate 7%, term 20 years. The monthly rate is 7% divided by 12, which is about 0.5833% a month, and the number of deposits is 20 times 12, which is 240 months. Using the page formula, the corpus is $500 times one plus the monthly rate to the power of 240, minus one, divided by the monthly rate, which gives $260463.33. That is the calculator's own output for these defaults. Deposits paid in total $120000, so growth from interest is $260463.33 minus $120000, which is $140463.33.

Who this term suits for a home household: a home household building a long home base for retirement, for example owners who plan to retire in their own home in about 20 years and want the corpus to cover maintenance, utilities and care costs without selling the house.

FAQs

When should I start saving for retirement?
As early as possible. Time in the market allows compounding to do more of the work.

Is this home calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Can $260,463.33 support retirement at home after 20 years?
It is a strong base: $120,000 paid in and $140,463.33 of growth, and growth now passes the deposits themselves. Whether it lasts depends on home costs, health and how long retirement runs.

Does a 20-year corpus survive a move to a smaller home?
Usually it is helped by one, because downsizing can release equity, but moving costs, fees and a new home's repairs must be counted before assuming the gain.

Is 7% a safe rate to assume for 20 years?
No single rate is safe for 20 years. Real returns vary, so treat 7% as an assumption to test, not a promise, and recheck the plan every few years.

Estimates only, not financial advice. Figures are approximate and do not include all fees, taxes, or changing rates unless stated.
