Home Break Even Units Calculator (25 Years)

Find how many units must be sold to break even. This home version uses a 25-year planning term as its starting point.

—

A result of 500.00 break even units means 500 units must be sold to cover the $10,000 fixed costs exactly, leaving no profit and no loss. Selling fewer than 500 units leaves part of the fixed costs uncovered, while each unit sold after the 500th moves the business into profit, because its $50 price exceeds its $30 variable cost. The 25-year term is a planning horizon only and does not change this 500-unit total.

Formula

Break even units equal fixed costs divided by price minus variable cost per unit.

How it works

At break even, total revenue exactly covers total costs, with no profit and no loss.

Worked example

Fixed costs $10,000, price per unit $50, variable cost per unit $30, term 25 years. First, the contribution per unit is $50 minus $30, which is $20. Using the page formula, break even units are $10,000 divided by $20, which is 500.00 units. That is the calculator's own result for these defaults, and it is the same on every page in this group because the term is not an input. At break even, revenue is 500 times $50, which is $25,000, variable costs are 500 times $30, which is $15,000, and $25,000 minus $15,000 minus $10,000 of fixed costs leaves zero profit, exactly as break even should.

As an illustration only, not the output of this page, spreading those 500 units evenly over 25 years is about 20.00 units a year. That is a planning average only, not a sales plan: home sales are seasonal, and quiet months do not reduce the fixed costs that must be covered.

Who this term suits for a home-based seller: an established home bakery or craft business run from the family kitchen, where the same recipes and customers have carried the business for years and the question is whether the next generation wants to keep it going.

FAQs

What is break even?
Break even is the point where revenue covers all costs, so profit is zero.

Is this home calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Does a 25-year break even suit a home bakery or craft business?
It can describe a business that has already lasted that long, but it is a poor target for a new one: no new home seller should plan to take twenty-five years to cover $10,000 of fixed costs when the same total could be cleared much sooner with steadier sales.

What if price falls to $40 for part of 25 years?
Then the contribution falls to $40 minus $30, which is $10 a unit, and break even for those sales rises to $10,000 divided by $10, which is 1,000 units. Discounting may win customers, but it doubles the hurdle in this example.

How often should a 25-year home break even be recalculated?
At least once a year, and whenever the price, an ingredient cost, or a fixed cost changes. A figure left untouched for twenty-five years will be wrong long before the term ends.
