Holiday Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (5 Years)

Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This holiday version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Monthly deposit figure is the regular amount to set aside each month at the entered rate so that the deposits plus growth reach the goal amount by the end of the 5 years; a larger goal raises the monthly amount, while a higher rate lowers it.

Formula

Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.

How it works

Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.

Worked example

Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 5 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 5 times 12, which is 60 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 60, minus one, which gives $735.23 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults. Over 60 months you would deposit $44,113.70 in total, so growth from interest is $50,000 minus $44,113.70, which is $5,886.30. Without interest the same goal would need $833.33 a month, so interest saves about $98.10 a month. The total deposited uses the unrounded monthly figure, so the rounded monthly amount times the number of months can differ slightly. Over only 5 years most of the goal still comes from your own deposits, not from interest, so a missed year hurts more than it would on a longer plan. All figures are nominal, before fees and taxes, and are planning estimates, not promises of any rate or final amount.

Who this term suits for a holiday saver: a family saving for a big holiday in about 5 years, such as a first overseas family trip with flights, hotel and spending money, where the deposit is high because interest has little time to help, so the amount must be protected even if holiday prices rise before the trip.

FAQs

How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.

Is this holiday calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Can a family really afford $735.23 a month for 5 years for a holiday?
Only if the household budget has that much spare every month after rent, bills and food; for many families $735.23 a month is a large commitment, and a smaller holiday goal or a longer term may be more realistic.

Why does interest only add $5,886.30 over 5 years?
Because interest has only 60 months to work on deposits that are still being paid in; most of the money has not been in the account long enough to earn much, so your own deposits do most of the work.

What if holiday prices rise faster than expected during these 5 years?
Then $50,000 may no longer cover the planned trip, so check flight and hotel prices before the trip and be ready to raise the deposit, choose a cheaper destination, or delay the holiday.
