Holiday Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (20 Years)
Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This holiday version uses a 20-year planning term as its starting point.
The Monthly deposit figure is the regular amount to set aside each month at the entered rate so that the deposits plus growth reach the goal amount by the end of the 20 years; a larger goal raises the monthly amount, while a higher rate lowers it.
Formula
Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.
How it works
Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.
Worked example
Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 20 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 20 times 12, which is 240 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 240, minus one, which gives $121.64 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults. Over 240 months you would deposit $29,194.69 in total, so growth from interest is $50,000 minus $29,194.69, which is $20,805.31. Without interest the same goal would need $208.33 a month, so interest saves about $86.69 a month. The total deposited uses the unrounded monthly figure, so the rounded monthly amount times the number of months can differ slightly. Over 20 years growth covers more than two fifths of the goal, but a single fixed 5% rate for 20 years is only an assumption, not a promise. All figures are nominal, before fees and taxes, and are planning estimates, not promises of any rate or final amount.
Who this term suits for a holiday saver: a couple saving for a milestone holiday in about 20 years, such as a retirement trip or a long-planned visit to a far-off destination, where the monthly deposit is modest but the plan must survive two decades of changing travel costs.
FAQs
How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.
Is this holiday calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
How can $121.64 a month reach $50,000 in 20 years?
Because 240 deposits of $121.64 total $29,194.69, and interest at the assumed 5% rate adds $20,805.31 over 20 years, bringing the total to $50,000.
Does a 20-year holiday goal survive changes in travel costs?
Only if it is reviewed: a trip priced today will almost certainly cost more in 20 years, so the goal amount itself may need to rise even if the monthly deposit stays the same.
Is 5% a safe rate to assume for 20 years?
No, 5% is only the entered assumption; a lower real average rate would leave the same deposit short of the goal, so do not treat the $50,000 figure as guaranteed.
