Holiday Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (15 Years)

Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This holiday version uses a 15-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Monthly deposit figure is the regular amount to set aside each month at the entered rate so that the deposits plus growth reach the goal amount by the end of the 15 years; a larger goal raises the monthly amount, while a higher rate lowers it.

Formula

Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.

How it works

Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.

Worked example

Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 15 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 15 times 12, which is 180 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 180, minus one, which gives $187.06 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults. Over 180 months you would deposit $33,671.43 in total, so growth from interest is $50,000 minus $33,671.43, which is $16,328.57. Without interest the same goal would need $277.78 a month, so interest saves about $90.72 a month. The total deposited uses the unrounded monthly figure, so the rounded monthly amount times the number of months can differ slightly. Over 15 years about a third of the goal comes from growth, so starting early matters more than finding a slightly higher rate. All figures are nominal, before fees and taxes, and are planning estimates, not promises of any rate or final amount.

Who this term suits for a holiday saver: a family working towards a once-in-a-lifetime trip in about 15 years, such as a world tour or a trip to mark a child finishing school, where starting early keeps the monthly amount low even though the trip itself is still a long way off.

FAQs

How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.

Is this holiday calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why is the 15-year deposit only $187.06 a month?
Because the goal is spread over 180 deposits and interest has 15 years to compound, so growth covers $16,328.57 of the $50,000 and your own deposits cover the rest.

Is a 15-year holiday savings plan too long to trust?
It is long enough that travel plans, income and prices will all change, so treat the $50,000 figure as a moving target and review the deposit every few years rather than setting it once and forgetting it.

What happens if we skip deposits in tight years?
Skipping deposits lowers the final amount and cuts the interest those deposits would have earned, so a skipped year is hard to make up later without raising the monthly amount.
