Holiday Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (10 Years)

Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This holiday version uses a 10-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Monthly deposit figure is the regular amount to set aside each month at the entered rate so that the deposits plus growth reach the goal amount by the end of the 10 years; a larger goal raises the monthly amount, while a higher rate lowers it.

Formula

Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.

How it works

Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.

Worked example

Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 10 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 10 times 12, which is 120 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 120, minus one, which gives $321.99 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults. Over 120 months you would deposit $38,639.31 in total, so growth from interest is $50,000 minus $38,639.31, which is $11,360.69. Without interest the same goal would need $416.67 a month, so interest saves about $94.68 a month. The total deposited uses the unrounded monthly figure, so the rounded monthly amount times the number of months can differ slightly. Over 10 years interest already covers more than a fifth of the goal, which is why the monthly deposit is less than half the 5-year figure. All figures are nominal, before fees and taxes, and are planning estimates, not promises of any rate or final amount.

Who this term suits for a holiday saver: a household planning a dream holiday in about 10 years, such as an anniversary trip or a multi-country tour, where a steady monthly deposit is easier to keep than a large lump sum, and the plan can be reviewed as flight and hotel prices change.

FAQs

How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.

Is this holiday calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Is $321.99 a month realistic for a 10-year holiday goal?
For many households it is easier than the 5-year figure, because the cost is spread over 120 months, but it still needs to survive job changes, rent rises and other family costs for a full decade.

What does the $11,360.69 of growth actually mean here?
It is the part of the $50,000 goal not covered by your own deposits: you deposit $38,639.31 over 10 years, and interest at the assumed 5% rate adds the remaining $11,360.69.

Should the holiday plan change if flight and hotel prices rise over 10 years?
Yes, review the plan every few years; if travel prices rise faster than the fund, either raise the monthly deposit, pick a cheaper trip, or accept a shorter holiday.
