Holiday Present Value Calculator (5 Years)

Find how much a future amount is worth today. This holiday version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The "Present value" figure is the amount you would need to set aside today, at the rate you entered, for it to grow to your future amount over 5 years, so a lower figure than the future amount shows how much of that future cost is covered by growth over time rather than by money set aside today.

Formula

Present value equals future amount divided by one plus rate to the power of years.

How it works

A future amount is worth less today because money today can earn interest.

Worked example

Future amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 5 years. First, one plus the rate is 1.05, and 1.05 to the power of 5 is about 1.27628. Using the page formula, present value is $50,000 divided by 1.27628, which is $39,176.31. That is the calculator's own output for the page defaults. The discount is $50,000 minus $39,176.31, which is $10,823.69, so waiting 5 years removes $10,823.69 of value in present-day money at 5% a year.

After only 5 years the discount is still modest, because interest has had only a short time to work. If the amount set aside today grew at a steady 5% a year, it would reach $50,000 in 5 years.

Who this term suits for a holiday saver: a family planning a big holiday in about 5 years, such as a first long-haul family trip or a honeymoon put off for a few seasons, checking what must be set aside today before the next few years of saving, rather than waiting until the trip is booked and finding the price has moved.

FAQs

What is present value?
Present value is what a future sum is worth today after allowing for interest over time.

Is this holiday calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

What does $39,176.31 mean for a holiday 5 years away?
It means a holiday that will cost $50,000 in 5 years is worth $39,176.31 in present-day money at a steady 5% a year. Setting that amount aside today, growing at 5%, would reach $50,000 in 5 years, before fees, taxes, or changes in holiday prices.

Why is the discount only $10,823.69 over 5 years?
Because discounting runs for only 5 years. The longer money is discounted, the larger the gap between present value and the future amount, so the 5-year discount is the smallest in this group.

Should I set aside $39,176.31 today for a $50,000 holiday in 5 years?
Only as a planning figure. It assumes a steady 5% return every year and a fixed $50,000 holiday price, neither of which is guaranteed. Treat it as a target to save toward, and review it if flight, hotel, or tour prices move.

Estimates only, not financial advice. Figures are approximate and do not include all fees, taxes, or changing rates unless stated.
