Holiday Present Value Calculator (20 Years)

Find how much a future amount is worth today. This holiday version uses a 20-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The "Present value" figure is the amount you would need to set aside today, at the rate you entered, for it to grow to your future amount over 20 years, so a lower figure than the future amount shows how much of that future cost is covered by growth over time rather than by money set aside today.

Formula

Present value equals future amount divided by one plus rate to the power of years.

How it works

A future amount is worth less today because money today can earn interest.

Worked example

Future amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 20 years. First, one plus the rate is 1.05, and 1.05 to the power of 20 is about 2.65330. Using the page formula, present value is $50,000 divided by 2.65330, which is $18,844.47. That is the calculator's own output for the page defaults. The discount is $50,000 minus $18,844.47, which is $31,155.53, so waiting 20 years removes $31,155.53 of value in present-day money at 5% a year.

After 20 years the discount is more than $31,000, over three-fifths of the future amount. If the amount set aside today grew at a steady 5% a year, it would reach $50,000 in 20 years, but two decades of assumptions make that a rough guide, not a promise.

Who this term suits for a holiday saver: a couple planning an anniversary or early-retirement trip in about 20 years, such as a long cruise or a slow tour of several countries, checking what a $50,000 trip two decades away is worth today before committing saving to it.

FAQs

What is present value?
Present value is what a future sum is worth today after allowing for interest over time.

Is this holiday calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

What does $18,844.47 mean over 20 years?
It means $50,000 spent on a holiday in 20 years is worth $18,844.47 today at 5% a year. A sum of $18,844.47 growing at 5% for 20 years would reach $50,000.

Is the 20-year figure useful for an anniversary or retirement trip?
Yes, as a long-range planning figure. It helps a couple see how much of a future trip must be funded in present-day money, while leaving room to revise the plan as retirement dates and travel tastes change.

Does a longer term make a holiday estimate less certain?
Yes. A 20-year figure assumes one steady 5% rate and one fixed $50,000 price for two decades, and neither will hold exactly. Use it to compare plans, not as an exact amount to set aside and forget.

Estimates only, not financial advice. Figures are approximate and do not include all fees, taxes, or changing rates unless stated.
