Holiday Loan Total Interest Calculator (30 Years)
Estimate total interest paid over a loan. This holiday version uses a 30-year planning term as its starting point.
In plain terms, the Total interest figure is the extra cost of borrowing on top of the loan amount itself, and the Total paid figure is the loan amount plus that interest over the full 30 years, so the result shows the full price of borrowing, not just the monthly payment.
Formula
Total interest equals monthly EMI times number of payments minus the principal.
How it works
A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.
Worked example
Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 30 years. The monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is 0.0054167, and there are 360 monthly payments. Using the page formula, the EMI is $1,264.14 a month, so the total paid is $455,088.98. Total interest is $455,088.98 minus $200,000, equal to $255,088.98, or 127.5% of the amount borrowed. That is about $8,502.97 of interest a year.
Stretching from 25 to 30 years saves only $86.27 a month, but adds $49,964.68 of interest. That is the clearest warning on this page: five extra years of payments buy less than $90 a month of relief, yet cost nearly $50,000 more. A household that can afford $1,350.41 should think hard before dropping to $1,264.14 at that price.
Who this term suits for a holiday borrower: a household taking on a 30-year commitment only for a holiday home that will genuinely be used for 30 years, such as a retirement seaside home bought early and visited for decades, and even then the $255,088.98 interest bill should be weighed against renting holiday stays instead.
FAQs
Why does a longer loan cost more interest?
More payments mean interest is charged for longer, so total interest rises even if each payment is smaller.
Is this holiday calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why does stretching from 25 to 30 years save only $86.27 a month but add $49,964.68 of interest?
Because at long terms the monthly payment is mostly interest, so extra years add many more interest charges while barely reducing the monthly amount, which is why the EMI floor flattens as the term grows.
Does a 30-year holiday loan outlast the holiday it paid for?
For any trip, many times over: a fortnight holiday would be paid for over 30 years. Even for a holiday home, 30 years is a working lifetime, and the home will need repairs, taxes, and upkeep on top of the $1,264.14 payment throughout.
What must a borrower check before choosing 30 years for a holiday loan?
That the $1,264.14 payment stays affordable through job changes, health changes, and years with no holiday travel, and that the total of $455,088.98, not just the monthly figure, is acceptable for what was bought.
