Holiday Loan EMI Calculator (25 Years)
Estimate the monthly EMI for a loan from amount, rate and term. This holiday version uses a 25-year planning term as its starting point.
In real terms, the Monthly payment is the fixed amount to pay every month for 25 years, and the Total paid is the full amount paid over all 300 monthly payments.
Formula
EMI equals principal times monthly rate times one plus monthly rate to the power of payments, divided by that power minus one.
How it works
This assumes a fixed rate and equal monthly payments with no extra fees.
Worked example
Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 25 years. The monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is 0.0054167, and there are 300 monthly payments. Using the page formula, the EMI is $1,350.41 a month. Over 300 payments the total paid is $405,124.30, so interest is $205,124.30, which is 102.6% of the amount borrowed.
At 25 years total interest passes the amount borrowed: $205,124.30 of interest on a $200,000 loan, for total payments of $405,124.30. In other words, the borrower pays back the holiday borrowing twice over, once as principal and once as interest. For a holiday borrower that is a clear warning line: beyond this point the cost of borrowing is larger than the thing that was borrowed for.
Who this term suits for a holiday borrower: almost nobody borrowing for holidays themselves, and only a borrower with a long-lived holiday property who has deliberately weighed a $1,350.41 monthly payment against $205,124.30 of interest, and who is comfortable paying more in interest than the original loan over 300 payments.
FAQs
What is an EMI?
An EMI is a fixed monthly payment that covers both interest and principal over the loan term.
Is this holiday calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why does interest pass the amount borrowed at 25 years?
Because 300 monthly payments give interest 25 years to accumulate, and the balance falls slowly in the early years. Total interest reaches $205,124.30, which is 102.6% of the $200,000 borrowed, so total payments are $405,124.30.
Is a 25-year holiday loan ever sensible?
Only for a durable holiday property that will be used for the full 25 years, and only after comparing the $205,124.30 interest bill with saving first or borrowing less. For holiday travel alone, a 25-year term is not sensible.
How do overpayments after a good year shorten a 25-year holiday loan?
Extra payments reduce the balance, so less interest builds up in later months and the loan can finish earlier. This calculator assumes fixed equal payments, so the exact saving from overpaying would need to be checked with the lender, including whether overpayments are allowed without a fee.
