Holiday Future Value Monthly Savings Calculator (25 Years)

Estimate the future value of regular monthly savings. This holiday version uses a 25-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The future value is the total amount your monthly deposits plus the interest they earn would be worth at the end of the 25-year term, so it shows what your regular saving plan builds to by that date, not just the total you paid in.

Formula

Future value uses the monthly rate and the number of monthly deposits to grow each deposit with interest.

How it works

Each monthly deposit earns interest from the month it is made until the end of the term.

Worked example

Monthly deposit $500, annual rate 6%, term 25 years. The monthly rate is 6% divided by 12, which is 0.5%, and the number of deposits is 25 times 12, which is 300 months. Using the page formula, the future value is $500 times 1.005 to the power of 300, minus one, divided by 0.005. Since 1.005 to the power of 300 is about 4.46497, the multiplier is about 692.9940, so the future value is $500 times 692.9940, which is $346,496.98. That is the calculator's own output for these defaults.

You will have paid in $150,000 over the term, so interest adds $196,496.98, which now passes the amount paid in. From this point on, interest contributes more to the fund than the saver's own deposits do.

Who this term suits for a holiday saver: a saver who starts young and builds a lifetime travel fund, such as saving from early working years towards retirement travel, where the fund is meant to pay for many journeys over a long retirement rather than one holiday.

FAQs

How does monthly saving grow?
Regular deposits grow because each deposit earns interest, and that interest then earns more interest.

Is this holiday calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Is $346,496.98 realistic for 25 years of holiday saving?
Only as a planning illustration. It assumes $500 every month for 300 months at a steady 6% a year, with nothing withdrawn. Real saving is interrupted by life, rates vary, and travel prices rise, so the real fund and what it can buy will differ.

Why does interest pass the amount paid in at 25 years?
Because compounding builds on itself. The $150,000 of deposits earns $196,496.98 of interest over 25 years, since the balance grows year after year and each year's interest earns further interest. Before 25 years the deposits are still larger than the interest.

Should the deposit rise as income grows over 25 years?
Yes, if travel prices are also rising. This page holds the deposit at $500 for the whole term, but a saver whose income grows should consider raising it, otherwise a fund built on a 25-year-old deposit may buy far less travel than planned.
