Hamster Cage Size Calculator

Show minimum floor area for a hamster cage by species type.

—

The floor area result is the rough minimum cage floor size for the hamster type you chose, measured as connected floor space.

Formula

Syrian hamsters need roughly 100 by 50 cm of floor; dwarf hamsters roughly 80 by 40 cm, as minimum guides.

How it works

Floor area matters more than height for hamsters, because they burrow and run rather than climb. Deep bedding, a large wheel and hiding places matter alongside floor size.

Worked example

For example, a Syrian hamster needs a minimum floor area of 100 cm × 50 cm = 5,000 cm², with deep bedding for burrowing.

FAQs

Do levels count as floor area?
No. Connected floor space counts; small stacked levels do not replace it.

Is a bigger wheel important?
Yes. Too-small wheels bend the back; Syrians need a large wheel.

Can two hamsters share?
Syrians must live alone; some dwarfs can, but fights happen.
