Farm Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (15 Years)

Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This farm version uses a 15-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Monthly deposit figure is the fixed amount to set aside every month for 15 years to reach the goal amount at the entered rate, so compare it with regular farm income to check that it can be sustained every month for the full term.

Formula

Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.

How it works

Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.

Worked example

Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 15 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 15 times 12, which is 180 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 180, minus one, which gives $187.06 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults.

Over 180 months you deposit about $33,671.43 in total, and growth at 5% supplies the remaining $16,328.57 to reach the $50,000 goal. Without interest you would need $277.78 a month, so interest saves about $90.72 a month on these figures. Totals use the unrounded figure as the calculator does, so the rounded monthly amount times the number of months can differ slightly. All figures are estimates for planning only, not a promise of any rate or final amount.

Who this term suits on a farm: a farm household funding a bigger step, such as buying a second-hand tractor outright, extending a dairy shed, or replanting an orchard block over about 15 years. The monthly amount is modest, which suits a farm income that rises and falls with seasons, provided the deposit is kept up in good years too.

FAQs

How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.

Is this farm calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why is the 15-year deposit only $187.06 a month?
Because 180 monthly deposits at 5% compound for a long time: you deposit $33,671.43 in total and growth supplies $16,328.57 of the $50,000 goal. The longer the term, the more of the goal comes from growth rather than from your own deposits.

Is a 15-year farm savings plan too long to trust?
It is long enough that the goal itself may change, for example if you switch crops or expand the dairy herd. That does not make the plan wrong, but it does mean reviewing the goal and the rate every few years instead of setting it once and forgetting it.

What happens if I skip deposits in bad harvest years?
Skipped deposits cost more than the missed amount, because those deposits would also have earned interest for the remaining years. If a season is bad, pay what you can and recalculate, rather than treating the missed months as free.
