Farm Loan Total Interest Calculator (10 Years)

Estimate total interest paid over a loan. This farm version uses a 10-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Total interest figure is the extra cost of borrowing on top of the loan amount itself, and the Total paid figure is the loan amount plus that interest, so together they show the full amount repaid over the 10-year term.

Formula

Total interest equals monthly EMI times number of payments minus the principal.

How it works

A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.

Worked example

Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 10 years. The monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is 0.0054167, and there are 120 monthly payments. Using the page formula, the EMI is $2,270.96 a month, so the total paid is $272,515.15. Total interest is $272,515.15 minus $200,000, equal to $72,515.15, or 36.3% of the amount borrowed. That is about $7,251.52 of interest a year. Doubling the term from 5 to 10 years more than doubles the interest, from $34,793.78 to $72,515.15, because interest is charged for twice as many years.

Who this term suits for a farm borrower: a farmer expanding a dairy herd or planting an orchard, for example borrowing for sheds, fencing and young stock, who needs a payment that fits seasonal milk or fruit income over a full decade.

FAQs

Why does a longer loan cost more interest?
More payments mean interest is charged for longer, so total interest rises even if each payment is smaller.

Is this farm calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why does interest more than double when the term doubles from 5 to 10 years?
Because interest is charged on the outstanding balance every month. A longer term keeps a larger balance outstanding for longer, so the extra 60 payments add more interest than the first 60 payments did.

Is 10 years the usual horizon for a farm equipment or land loan?
It is a common middle choice: long enough to spread the cost of a shed, orchard or land purchase, but short enough that the interest bill stays well below the amount borrowed, at $72,515.15 on $200,000.

What if crop prices fall in year 3 of a 10-year farm loan?
The EMI does not fall with prices, so a price fall squeezes the same $2,270.96 a month out of a smaller income. That is why a 10-year farm plan needs a reserve built up in good years.
