Farm Effective Annual Rate Calculator (10 Years)
Convert a nominal annual rate to an effective annual rate. This farm version uses a 10-year planning term as its starting point.
The Effective annual rate is the true yearly cost of borrowing once compounding during the year is included, so it is slightly higher than the nominal rate when interest compounds more than once a year, and it is the yearly rate to compare when judging the real cost of a loan.
Formula
Effective rate equals one plus nominal rate divided by periods, to the power of periods, minus one.
How it works
More frequent compounding raises the effective rate slightly above the nominal rate.
Worked example
Nominal rate 6%, compounding periods 12 a year, term 10 years. Using the page formula, the monthly rate is 6 divided by 100 divided by 12, which is 0.005, or 0.5% a month, so the monthly factor is 1.005. Raising 1.005 to the power of 12 gives 1.061678. Subtracting one gives 0.061678, which is 6.17%. That is the effective annual rate for these defaults, and it is the same on every page in this group, because the effective rate is a yearly rate: the term does not change it, it only decides how many years that yearly rate applies for.
As an illustration only, not the output of this page, $10,000 growing at the effective 6.17% a year for 10 years would reach $18,193.97, compared with $17,908.48 at a flat 6% a year, a difference of $285.49 from monthly compounding alone. This illustration assumes the rate stays fixed for the whole term, with no fees, taxes, withdrawals, or extra deposits, so it is a planning comparison, not a promise.
Who this term suits on a farm: a dairy or mixed farm planning a 10-year loan, for example for a milking parlour upgrade or a young orchard block, where monthly compounding quietly lifts the true yearly cost above the headline rate for a full decade.
FAQs
What is an effective rate?
The effective rate is the true yearly rate after allowing for compounding during the year.
Is this farm calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why is the effective rate still 6.17% over 10 years?
Because the effective rate is a yearly rate, and the inputs are unchanged: 6% nominal, compounded 12 times a year. The 10-year term does not raise or lower the yearly rate; it only means that rate applies for 10 years.
How much does monthly compounding add over 10 years on a farm loan?
As an illustration only, $10,000 growing at the effective 6.17% a year for 10 years reaches $18,193.97, compared with $17,908.48 at a flat 6% a year, a difference of $285.49 from compounding alone, before fees or taxes.
Is 10 years a sensible horizon for comparing farm loan rates?
Yes. Ten years covers a full equipment cycle and several harvests, so a dairy or arable farm can compare lenders on the effective rate, 6.17% here, rather than on a headline nominal rate that hides compounding.
