Emergency Loan Total Interest Calculator (25 Years)
Estimate total interest paid over a loan. This emergency version uses a 25-year planning term as its starting point.
The total interest is the extra cost of borrowing above the amount borrowed over 25 years, and the total paid is the amount borrowed plus that interest.
Formula
Total interest equals monthly EMI times number of payments minus the principal.
How it works
A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.
Worked example
Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 25 years. The monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is 0.0054167, and there are 300 monthly payments. Using the page formula, the EMI is $1,350.41 a month, so the total paid is $405,124.30. Total interest is $405,124.30 minus $200,000, equal to $205,124.30, or 102.6% of the amount borrowed. That is about $8,204.97 of interest a year. At 25 years the interest passes the amount borrowed itself: the borrower pays back more than twice the original emergency sum, with interest alone exceeding the loan.
Who this term suits for an emergency borrower: a borrower with a very low income after a long illness or disability, for whom about $1,350 a month is the only payment that avoids missing payments, and who must be told plainly that this route pays back more than double, so it should be a last resort, not a first choice.
FAQs
Why does a longer loan cost more interest?
More payments mean interest is charged for longer, so total interest rises even if each payment is smaller.
Is this emergency calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why does interest pass the amount borrowed at 25 years?
Because the loan runs for 300 months, and in the early years most of each $1,350.41 payment is interest, so the balance falls slowly. Interest keeps being charged month after month on that slowly falling balance until it adds up to $205,124.30, more than the $200,000 borrowed.
Is a 25-year emergency loan ever sensible?
Only as a last resort, when every shorter payment is unaffordable and the alternative is default or losing the home. Even then, the borrower should treat it as a temporary structure: overpay whenever income improves, and review the loan each year rather than letting it run untouched for 25 years.
How do overpayments shorten a 25-year emergency loan?
An extra payment that goes to the principal reduces the balance at once, so every later month charges interest on a smaller sum. Check first that the lender applies overpayments to principal without penalty, because an overpayment that is treated as an advance payment of future interest saves far less.
