Emergency Loan EMI Calculator (25 Years)

Estimate the monthly EMI for a loan from amount, rate and term. This emergency version uses a 25-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The monthly payment is the fixed amount due every month over 25 years, and the total paid is the sum of all those monthly payments over the full term.

Formula

EMI equals principal times monthly rate times one plus monthly rate to the power of payments, divided by that power minus one.

How it works

This assumes a fixed rate and equal monthly payments with no extra fees.

Worked example

Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 25 years. The monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is 0.0054167, and there are 300 monthly payments. Using the page formula, the EMI is $1,350.41 a month. Over 300 payments the total paid is $405,124.30, so interest is $205,124.30, which passes the $200,000 amount borrowed for the first time in this group. At this term the borrower pays more in interest than the emergency itself cost.

Who this term suits for an emergency borrower: An older borrower hit by a late-life emergency, for example a worker near retirement who borrowed for urgent medical treatment, who must weigh a lower monthly payment against the fact that interest now exceeds the principal and repayments will run well into retirement.

FAQs

What is an EMI?
An EMI is a fixed monthly payment that covers both interest and principal over the loan term.

Is this emergency calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why does interest pass the amount borrowed at 25 years?
Because the balance is kept alive for 300 months. Even at 6.5%, 25 years of monthly interest on a slowly falling balance adds up to more than the original $200,000.

Is a 25-year emergency loan ever sensible?
Only when no shorter term is affordable and the alternative is worse, such as unpaid medical bills or losing a home. Even then the borrower should plan overpayments as soon as income recovers.

How do overpayments shorten a 25-year emergency loan?
Every extra dollar goes straight to the balance, so later months are charged interest on a smaller amount. Regular overpayments can cut years off the term and thousands off the interest.
