Education Simple Interest Total Calculator (30 Years)
Calculate simple interest and the total amount to repay. This education version uses a 30-year planning term as its starting point.
The Interest figure is the extra cost added to the principal over 30 years, and the Total is the full amount to repay: the principal plus that Interest.
Formula
Simple interest equals principal times rate times time, divided by 100.
How it works
Interest is charged only on the original principal, not on interest already added.
Worked example
Principal $10,000, annual rate 5%, term 30 years. Simple interest is $10,000 times 5 times 30, divided by 100, which is $15,000.00. The total to repay is $10,000 plus $15,000.00, which is $25,000.00. That is 150% growth on the original amount, because simple interest grows by the same $500 every year, and after 30 years it has added $15,000.00. After 30 years the interest is one and a half times the amount borrowed, so the education borrower pays back two and a half times the original sum.
Who this term suits for an education borrower: no education borrower as a sensible plan, and that is the point of this page: a 30-year term is a lifetime warning, showing a student debt that would still be repaid decades after graduation, with $15,000.00 of interest for $10,000 borrowed.
FAQs
What is simple interest?
Simple interest is interest charged only on the original amount, not on accumulated interest.
Is this education calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Is a 30-year term normal for an education loan?
No. Thirty years is a mortgage-length term, not a normal education term. Most education loans are cleared far sooner, and a 30-year figure should be read as a warning about stretching debt, not as a recommendation.
How can the $15,000.00 interest bill be cut?
By shortening the term or paying extra. Every year cut from the term saves $500 of interest, so repaying in 20 years instead of 30 saves $5,000.00, and repaying in 10 years saves $10,000.00.
What is a borrower trading when they choose 30 years over 5 years?
Lower monthly payments now, in exchange for $12,500.00 more interest overall: $15,000.00 instead of $2,500.00. That trade is rarely worth it for an education loan, unless monthly affordability leaves no other choice.
