Education Simple Interest Total Calculator (10 Years)
Calculate simple interest and the total amount to repay. This education version uses a 10-year planning term as its starting point.
The result shows two figures for 10 years: the interest charged on the original principal, and the total to repay, which is the principal plus that interest.
Formula
Simple interest equals principal times rate times time, divided by 100.
How it works
Interest is charged only on the original principal, not on interest already added.
Worked example
Principal $10,000, annual rate 5%, term 10 years. Simple interest is $10,000 times 5 times 10, divided by 100, which is $5,000.00. The total to repay is $10,000 plus $5,000.00, which is $15,000.00. That is 50% growth on the original amount, because simple interest grows by the same $500 every year, and after 10 years it has added $5,000.00. After 10 years the interest is half the amount borrowed, so the education borrower pays back one and a half times the original sum.
Who this term suits for an education borrower: a student funding a full degree plus a further year of study, for example a four-year degree followed by a postgraduate certificate, where a 10-year repayment keeps the monthly burden lower than a 5-year term while the graduate builds a career.
FAQs
What is simple interest?
Simple interest is interest charged only on the original amount, not on accumulated interest.
Is this education calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why is 10-year interest exactly double the 5-year interest?
Because simple interest adds the same $500 every year. Ten years at $500 a year is $5,000.00, exactly twice the $2,500.00 for 5 years. There is no compounding to make the second 5 years cost more than the first.
Is a 10-year term a common middle choice for education finance?
Yes, it is often the middle ground: the total interest of $5,000.00 is manageable, and the debt is usually cleared well within working life, unlike the very long terms in this group.
What should a student check before a 10-year education plan?
Whether course fees, living costs or a change of course could add to the amount borrowed, because any extra borrowing starts its own $500-a-year-style charge at its own rate, on top of this $5,000.00.
