Education Loan Total Interest Calculator (25 Years)
Estimate total interest paid over a loan. This education version uses a 25-year planning term as its starting point.
The total interest figure is the extra amount paid on top of the loan amount over the full term, and the total paid figure is the loan amount plus that interest, so the two figures together show the full cost of the loan.
Formula
Total interest equals monthly EMI times number of payments minus the principal.
How it works
A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.
Worked example
Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 25 years. The monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is 0.0054167, and there are 300 monthly payments. Using the page formula, the EMI is $1,350.41 a month, so the total paid is $405,124.30. Total interest is $405,124.30 minus $200,000, equal to $205,124.30, or 102.6% of the amount borrowed. That is about $8,204.97 of interest a year. This is the first term in the group where total interest passes the amount borrowed: the borrower pays back more in interest than the education itself was borrowed for. Totals use the unrounded EMI, as the calculator does, so rounded figures multiplied out can differ by a dollar or two.
Who this term suits for an education borrower: a borrower on a modest starting salary, for example in teaching or public service, who needs the lowest practical monthly payment now and plans to overpay later as pay rises, rather than treating 25 years as a fixed plan.
FAQs
Why does a longer loan cost more interest?
More payments mean interest is charged for longer, so total interest rises even if each payment is smaller.
Is this education calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why does interest pass the amount borrowed at 25 years?
Because the balance stays large for so long that interest keeps compounding on it year after year. At $1,350.41 a month, the borrower pays $405,124.30 in total, of which $205,124.30 is interest alone.
Is a 25-year education loan ever sensible?
Only when the monthly payment is the binding constraint, for example a low starting salary with no other way to borrow, and only with a plan to overpay. Without overpayments, the borrower pays more than double the amount borrowed.
How do overpayments shorten a 25-year education loan?
An overpayment cuts the balance directly, so less interest accrues in every later month. Overpayments made in the first few years save far more interest than the same amounts paid in the final years.
