Education Inflation Adjusted Value Calculator (5 Years)

Estimate what an amount will be worth after inflation. This education version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Future amount is the price the starting amount grows to after 5 years at the entered inflation rate, so it shows how much would be needed later to buy what the starting amount buys now.

Formula

Future amount equals amount times one plus inflation rate to the power of years.

How it works

Inflation means the same amount buys less over time, so future prices are higher.

Worked example

Amount $10,000, inflation rate 3%, term 5 years. Using the page formula, the future amount is $10,000 times 1.03 to the power of 5, which is $11,592.74. The rise is $11,592.74 minus $10,000, which is $1,592.74, or 15.9% on top of the original amount. In education terms, this is the future price of $10,000 of costs today: a course, a year of fees or a set of study costs that costs $10,000 now will cost about $11,592.74 in 5 years if prices rise at 3% a year, before any change of course, university or fee policy is counted.

Who this term suits for an education planner: a parent whose child starts university in about 5 years, for example a family with a teenager in secondary school, who needs a firm figure for first-year fees, books and a laptop rather than today's price, while the child is still at school.

FAQs

What does inflation do to money?
Inflation reduces what money can buy, so a sum today will need to be larger in future to buy the same things.

Is this education calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Should a family budget $11,592.74, or $10,000, for fees in 5 years?
Budget $11,592.74 as the planning figure, because $10,000 of fees today costs $11,592.74 in 5 years at 3% a year, and budgeting today's price leaves a $1,592.74 gap.

Does 3% inflation match real education fee rises?
Not always. General inflation at 3% is the page default, but university fees often rise faster, so a family should check the actual fee trend for the course they have in mind and re-run the calculator with that rate.

What if fees rise faster than 3% over 5 years?
The future price rises faster too. At 5% a year the same $10,000 becomes $12,762.82 in 5 years, which is $1,170.08 more than the 3% figure, so a small rate change matters even over a short term.
