Education Credit Card Monthly Interest Calculator (5 Years)

Estimate monthly interest on a card balance. This education version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The result shows the monthly interest on the balance at the entered annual rate: it is the interest charge for one month only, and paying only this amount leaves the balance unchanged.

Formula

Monthly interest equals balance times annual rate divided by 100 divided by 12.

How it works

Paying only interest leaves the balance unchanged. Paying more than interest reduces the balance.

Worked example

Balance $5,000, annual rate 18%, term 5 years. Using the page formula, monthly interest is $5,000 times 18, divided by 100, divided by 12, which is $75.00 a month. That is 1.5% of the balance every month, or $900 a year. The term in years does not change this monthly answer, because the formula uses only balance and annual rate. As a multi-year extension only, not a forecast, assuming the same $5,000 balance and the same 18% rate stay unchanged, with no new spending, no repayments of principal, no fees and no late charges counted, the interest over 5 years is 60 months times $75.00, which is $4,500. That is 90% of the original balance, paid in interest alone, while the $5,000 itself is still owed at the end. Paying only the $75.00 interest leaves the balance unchanged, so the debt never falls; paying more than $75.00 a month is what starts to reduce it.

Who this term suits for an education borrower: a student or new graduate who put textbooks, a laptop or a first term of fees on a card and wants the balance understood before it becomes a long-term debt, because $75.00 a month of interest alone is money that buys no books, no course and no qualification.

FAQs

Why is card interest high?
Card rates are usually higher than loan rates, so balances grow quickly if only minimum payments are made.

Is this education calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Is $75.00 a month a lot of interest for a student?
Yes, for a student budget it is: $900 a year of interest on a $5,000 balance is almost a fifth of the balance every year, and it is paid before a single dollar of the original spending is cleared.

Should a student pay only the $75.00 interest each month?
No. Paying only the interest keeps the $5,000 balance exactly where it is, so after 5 years the student would have paid $4,500 in interest and still owe the full $5,000. Any payment above $75.00 is what reduces the balance.

Does the 5-year figure mean the card nearly doubles the cost?
Almost: $4,500 of interest over 5 years on top of the $5,000 balance means the spending would have cost $9,500 in total if only interest were paid, before any fees or new purchases are counted.
