Education Credit Card Monthly Interest Calculator (40 Years)

Estimate monthly interest on a card balance. This education version uses a 40-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The result shows the monthly interest on the balance at the entered annual rate: it is the interest charge for one month only, and paying only this amount leaves the balance unchanged.

Formula

Monthly interest equals balance times annual rate divided by 100 divided by 12.

How it works

Paying only interest leaves the balance unchanged. Paying more than interest reduces the balance.

Worked example

Balance $5,000, annual rate 18%, term 40 years. Using the page formula, monthly interest is $5,000 times 18, divided by 100, divided by 12, which is $75.00 a month, or $900 a year. The term in years does not change this monthly answer, because the formula uses only balance and annual rate. As a multi-year extension only, not a forecast, assuming the same $5,000 balance and the same 18% rate stay unchanged, with no new spending, no repayments of principal, no fees and no late charges counted, the interest over 40 years is 480 months times $75.00, which is $36,000. That is 720% of the original balance: more than seven times the amount first borrowed, paid in interest alone, while the $5,000 itself is still owed at the end. Forty years of interest-only payments would cost $36,000 for the privilege of still owing $5,000.

Who this term suits for an education borrower: no education borrower as a real borrowing plan, and that is the point of this page: it is a lifetime warning, showing that a $75.00 monthly interest charge, left untouched for a working lifetime, costs $36,000 and clears nothing at all.

FAQs

Why is card interest high?
Card rates are usually higher than loan rates, so balances grow quickly if only minimum payments are made.

Is this education calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Is $36,000 over 40 years actually possible on a $5,000 card?
Yes, on the stated assumptions: $900 a year times 40 years is $36,000, and because only interest is paid, the $5,000 balance is still owed at the end, so the total cost would be $41,000 including the original debt.

What does 40 years of card interest warn a young student about?
That the cheapest month on a card is the month the balance is cleared. Every month the balance survives, the card charges another $75.00, and that charge never gets smaller on its own.

What should a reader take from a 40-year card interest page?
Not a repayment plan, but a rule: pay more than the interest every month, or find cheaper borrowing, because a balance that is only serviced is a balance that never ends.
