Education Credit Card Monthly Interest Calculator (25 Years)

Estimate monthly interest on a card balance. This education version uses a 25-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The monthly interest result is the interest charged in one month on the balance you entered at the annual rate you entered. Paying only this amount leaves the balance unchanged, and the term shown on this page does not change this monthly figure, because the calculation uses only the balance and the annual rate.

Formula

Monthly interest equals balance times annual rate divided by 100 divided by 12.

How it works

Paying only interest leaves the balance unchanged. Paying more than interest reduces the balance.

Worked example

Balance $5,000, annual rate 18%, term 25 years. Using the page formula, monthly interest is $5,000 times 18, divided by 100, divided by 12, which is $75.00 a month, or $900 a year. The term in years does not change this monthly answer, because the formula uses only balance and annual rate. As a multi-year extension only, not a forecast, assuming the same $5,000 balance and the same 18% rate stay unchanged, with no new spending, no repayments of principal, no fees and no late charges counted, the interest over 25 years is 300 months times $75.00, which is $22,500. That is 450% of the original balance: four and a half times the amount first borrowed, paid in interest alone, while the $5,000 itself is still owed at the end. A quarter of a century of interest-only payments would fund a whole education several times over, and still leave the original debt unpaid.

Who this term suits for an education borrower: no education borrower as a real plan, and that is the point of this page: a 25-year card balance is a warning about a debt that has outlived the qualification it paid for, and the only useful question it raises is how to clear the principal, not how to carry it longer.

FAQs

Why is card interest high?
Card rates are usually higher than loan rates, so balances grow quickly if only minimum payments are made.

Is this education calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Does 25 years of $75.00 interest really add up to $22,500?
Yes: $900 a year times 25 years is $22,500, which is 4.5 times the $5,000 balance, and that is before fees, rate rises or any new spending on the card are counted.

Is a 25-year education card debt ever sensible?
No. By year 25 the interest alone has cost more than most degrees, and the borrower still owes the full $5,000, so carrying the balance longer only increases the loss.

How do overpayments change a 25-year card balance?
Every dollar paid above $75.00 a month reduces the $5,000 balance, which in turn reduces the next month's interest, so overpayments compound in the borrower's favour instead of the card's.
