Dog Water Intake Calculator
Estimate a dog's daily water range from body weight.
This result means the dog needs roughly that amount of water each day, with hot weather and exercise pushing needs higher, and fresh water should always be available.
Formula
Daily water is roughly 40 to 60 ml per kilogram of body weight, with 50 ml per kilogram as a typical midpoint.
How it works
Weight is multiplied by the low and high ends of the range to give a daily band. Fresh water should always be available, and a sudden large change in drinking deserves attention.
Worked example
For example, for a 20 kg dog, 20 × 40 = 800 ml and 20 × 60 = 1,200 ml, so the estimated daily range is 800–1,200 ml, with 1.00 litres as the typical midpoint.
FAQs
Does wet food change it?
Yes. Wet food supplies water, so drinking from a bowl drops.
Is more water always better?
No. Very high intake can signal a problem.
How do I measure it?
Fill a measured bowl and note how much is gone in 24 hours.
