Dog Walking Distance and Time Calculator

Work out walking time for a dog walk from distance and walking speed.

—

This result means the moving time for the walk is about that many minutes at that speed, before sniff stops and play breaks, so a leisurely walk will usually take longer.

Formula

Walking time equals distance divided by speed, converted to minutes.

How it works

Distance divided by speed gives the moving time. Dogs add sniffing, marking and play stops, so real walk time is usually longer — add a buffer for a leisurely walk.

Worked example

For example, for a 3 km walk at 4 km/h, 3 ÷ 4 × 60 = 45 minutes.

FAQs

What speed should I use?
About 4 km/h for a relaxed dog walk; faster for an energetic dog.

Does breed change it?
Yes. Small, old or brachycephalic dogs walk slower and tire sooner.

Should puppies walk this far?
Puppies need shorter, gentler walks; this is a time calculation, not a recommendation.
