Dog Ideal Weight Range (Rough) Calculator

Show a rough maintenance weight band around a dog's current weight as a starting point for discussion.

—

This result means the band shows normal variation around the entered weight; it is not a target weight, since breed, frame, and body condition decide the right weight.

Formula

The rough band is current weight minus 10% to plus 10%.

How it works

A ±10% band is drawn around the entered weight to show how much normal variation matters. It cannot tell you whether the current weight itself is right — body condition scoring and breed norms do that.

Worked example

For example, for a 20 kg dog, 20 × 0.9 = 18.0 kg and 20 × 1.1 = 22.0 kg, so the rough band is 18.0–22.0 kg.

FAQs

Is my dog's ideal weight in this band?
Not necessarily. The band is around the current weight, not a breed ideal.

What decides ideal weight?
Breed, frame, muscle and body condition, assessed in person.

Should I aim for the middle?
No. Use this only as a rough reference.
