Dog Food Cups Per Day Calculator

Estimate daily dry-food cups for a dog from weight, activity and food energy density.

—

This result means the daily food amount is split across meals, giving roughly that many cups each day, and the amount should be adjusted to body condition.

Formula

Resting energy is 70 times weight to the power 0.75, multiplied by an activity factor, then divided by kcal per cup.

How it works

Weight gives resting energy, activity scales it to daily need, and dividing by the food's energy density gives cups. Food labels vary, so use the kcal figure from your own bag.

Worked example

For example, for a 20 kg dog with moderate activity, resting energy is 70 × 20^0.75 = 662.02 kcal, daily need is 662.02 × 1.6 = 1,059.23 kcal, and 1,059.23 ÷ 350 = 3.0 cups per day.

FAQs

Should I feed exactly this?
No. Adjust by body condition and weight trend over weeks.

Does neutering change it?
Yes, neutered dogs often need the lower activity factor.

What about treats?
Treats count towards daily calories, so reduce food if treats are frequent.
