Crate Size Calculator

Work out a minimum crate size from a dog's length and height, with room to stand and turn.

—

This result gives the minimum crate length and height to look for, with enough room for the dog to stand, turn, and lie stretched out.

Formula

Crate length is dog length plus about 15 cm; crate height is shoulder height plus about 10 cm.

How it works

Extra length lets the dog lie stretched, and extra height lets it stand without crouching. A crate much larger than this can feel less den-like for housetraining, so bigger is not always better.

Worked example

For example, a dog 80 cm long and 60 cm high at the shoulder needs a crate about 95 cm long (80 + 15) and about 70 cm high (60 + 10), with a depth of about 48 cm or more.

FAQs

Should I buy bigger for growth?
For a puppy, buy the adult size with a divider.

Does the dog need to stretch fully?
Yes, lying stretched out is part of the sizing check.

Is a crate a punishment?
No. It should be a safe resting place, never long-term confinement.
