Cat Water Intake Calculator

Estimate a cat's daily water range from body weight.

—

The result is the estimated amount of water the cat needs each day in total, including water from wet food, so the bowl alone may show less than the full range.

Formula

Daily water is roughly 40 to 60 ml per kilogram of body weight, with 50 ml per kilogram as a typical midpoint.

How it works

The same weight-based range as for dogs is used, but cats often drink less visibly because wet food contributes fluid. Multiple water points and a running fountain can encourage drinking.

Worked example

For example, a 4.5 kg cat gives 4.5 × 40 = 180 ml and 4.5 × 60 = 270 ml, so about 180–270 ml per day, with a typical midpoint of 4.5 × 50 = 225 ml, shown as 0.23 litres.

FAQs

My cat barely drinks. Is that normal?
Cats on wet food drink less from a bowl, which is expected.

Do cats prefer running water?
Many do, which is why fountains are popular.

When should I worry?
A sudden change in drinking, either way, is worth checking.
