Car Simple Interest Total Calculator (30 Years)

Calculate simple interest and the total amount to repay. This car version uses a 30-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Interest result is the extra cost of borrowing on top of the principal, and the Total result is the full amount to repay, so together they show how much more than the original amount the loan costs over 30 years.

Formula

Simple interest equals principal times rate times time, divided by 100.

How it works

Interest is charged only on the original principal, not on interest already added.

Worked example

Principal $10,000, annual rate 5%, term 30 years. Simple interest is $10,000 times 5 times 30, divided by 100, which is $15,000.00. The total to repay is $10,000 plus $15,000.00, which is $25,000.00. After 30 years the interest is one and a half times the amount borrowed. That is 150% growth on the original amount, because simple interest grows by the same $500 every year, and after 30 years it has added $15,000.00.

Who this term suits for a car buyer: no car buyer as a real plan, and that is the point of this page: a 30-year term shows how a small yearly charge becomes a bill larger than the car ever cost, spread over a full working life of driving.

FAQs

What is simple interest?
Simple interest is interest charged only on the original amount, not on accumulated interest.

Is this car calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Is a 30-year term normal for a car loan?
No. Car loans are normally a few years, because cars wear out and lose value. A 30-year figure is a planning warning, not a loan length any buyer should accept for a car.

How can the $15,000.00 interest bill be cut?
By paying the loan off sooner, borrowing less, or buying a cheaper car. Shortening the term is the most powerful step, because each year removed saves a full $500.

What is a buyer trading when they choose 30 years over 5 years?
Lower pressure in any single year in exchange for $12,500.00 more interest in total, and for paying for a car that will have been replaced many times over before the loan ends.
