Car Retirement Corpus Calculator (10 Years)
Estimate a retirement corpus from monthly savings. This car version uses a 10-year planning term as its starting point.
The Future value figure shows the total amount your regular monthly savings could grow to by retirement over 10 years at the rate you entered, combining what you paid in with the growth earned along the way.
Formula
Corpus uses the monthly rate and number of monthly savings to grow each saving with interest.
How it works
Starting earlier matters more than saving a little more later, because interest has longer to compound.
Worked example
A car owner sets aside $500 every month for 10 years at 7% a year. The monthly rate is 7% divided by 12, which is 0.0058333, and there are 120 monthly savings. Using the page formula, the corpus is $500 times ((1.0058333 to the power of 120 minus 1) divided by 0.0058333), which is $86,542.40. The owner paid in $60,000, so interest added $26,542.40, which is 30.7% of the corpus. Ten years more than doubles the 5-year result, because the second 5 years earn interest on the first 5 years as well as on new savings. For a car owner this starts to look like a real retirement car fund: a replacement car plus a reserve for insurance, fuel and servicing in early retirement.
Who this term suits for a car owner: A car owner in their forties or fifties with about 10 years left at work, who wants to trade in the current car once more before retirement and still have a pot left for running the next car without a loan.
FAQs
When should I start saving for retirement?
As early as possible. Time in the market allows compounding to do more of the work.
Is this car calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why does 10 years give $86,542.40, more than double the 5-year result?
Because compounding builds on itself. The first 5 years build $35,796.45, and in the second 5 years interest is earned on that whole sum as well as on the new $30,000 paid in, so the total grows faster than the deposits alone.
Should a car owner raise the $500 as pay rises over 10 years?
Yes, if income allows. A fixed $500 loses buying power as car prices, insurance and fuel rise, so raising the monthly saving with pay helps the pot keep pace with the cost of the car it is meant to buy and run.
Can a 10-year car pot replace selling a car at retirement?
Partly. $86,542.40 can buy a replacement car and leave a running-cost reserve, but it is not the same as selling a valuable classic or a business vehicle, and it does not cover housing or daily living costs, which need their own plan.
