Car Credit Card Monthly Interest Calculator (5 Years)
Estimate monthly interest on a card balance. This car version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.
In plain terms, this monthly interest amount is the interest charged for one month on the balance entered at the annual rate entered, before any payment toward the balance itself.
Formula
Monthly interest equals balance times annual rate divided by 100 divided by 12.
How it works
Paying only interest leaves the balance unchanged. Paying more than interest reduces the balance.
Worked example
Balance $5,000, annual rate 18%, term 5 years. Monthly interest is $5,000 times 18, divided by 100, divided by 12, which is $75.00 a month. That is the calculator's own output, and it is the same every month because the balance and rate do not change. If the car owner pays only interest, after 5 years they have paid $4,500 in interest, which is 90% of the balance, and they still owe the original $5,000. Paying more than $75.00 in any month is what finally reduces that balance.
Who this term suits for a car owner: a car owner who put a sudden repair bill on a card, for example a gearbox or engine repair on a used car, and plans to clear the balance from wages over the next few years, before the car is sold or traded in.
FAQs
Why is card interest high?
Card rates are usually higher than loan rates, so balances grow quickly if only minimum payments are made.
Is this car calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Should I put a $5,000 car repair on a card?
Only if you have a clear plan to pay more than $75.00 a month. At $75.00 a month you pay $4,500 in interest over 5 years and still owe the full $5,000, so a repair that costs $5,000 has really cost $9,500 before the balance is touched. Paying extra each month is what finally cuts the balance.
Can I clear a car card balance before selling the car in 5 years?
Yes, if you pay more than the interest every month and check the balance before you sell. A buyer will not clear your card debt for you, and selling the car does not cancel the $5,000 balance or the interest already paid. Work out the payoff date first, then set the sale date after it.
Is a card better than a car loan for a repair?
Usually not for $5,000. A car loan or a personal loan normally charges a lower rate than 18%, so the monthly interest would be lower than $75.00. A card only wins if you can clear the whole balance inside an interest-free period, which this calculator does not assume.
