Car Credit Card Monthly Interest Calculator (25 Years)
Estimate monthly interest on a card balance. This car version uses a 25-year planning term as its starting point.
In plain terms, this monthly interest amount is the interest charged for one month on the balance entered at the annual rate entered, before any payment toward the balance itself.
Formula
Monthly interest equals balance times annual rate divided by 100 divided by 12.
How it works
Paying only interest leaves the balance unchanged. Paying more than interest reduces the balance.
Worked example
Balance $5,000, annual rate 18%, term 25 years. Monthly interest is $5,000 times 18, divided by 100, divided by 12, which is $75.00 a month. That is the calculator's own output, and it is the same every month because the balance and rate do not change. If the car owner pays only interest, after 25 years they have paid $22,500 in interest, which is 450% of the balance, and they still owe the original $5,000. Paying more than $75.00 in any month is what finally reduces that balance.
Who this term suits for a car owner: a household that has carried car spending on a card for a quarter of a century, for example successive cars, repairs and accessories all added to the same balance, and now needs to see the lifetime cost before buying another car on credit.
FAQs
Why is card interest high?
Card rates are usually higher than loan rates, so balances grow quickly if only minimum payments are made.
Is this car calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Can a car card balance really survive 25 years?
The maths says yes: $75.00 a month for 300 months is $22,500 in interest, 450% of the $5,000 balance, and the balance is still $5,000. In real life a balance survives that long only if the owner keeps paying interest and never pays extra, while cars come and go around it.
How do 25 years of interest-only payments affect replacing the car?
They block it. Money spent on $75.00 a month of interest cannot be saved for a deposit, so the next car is also bought on credit, and the cycle repeats. Clearing the balance first, even slowly, frees the monthly payment for a deposit instead of interest.
Should a household agree a limit on car spending on cards?
Yes. A household limit, for example no car repair or accessory on a card unless it can be cleared within three months, stops a $5,000 balance from becoming a 25-year one. Without a limit, each new car expense quietly joins the old balance.
