Business Present Value Calculator (25 Years)
Find how much a future amount is worth today. This business version uses a 25-year planning term as its starting point.
The Present value figure is what the future amount is worth in today's money at the rate and term entered, so it is the amount to compare with cash available today rather than with the future amount itself.
Formula
Present value equals future amount divided by one plus rate to the power of years.
How it works
A future amount is worth less today because money today can earn interest.
Worked example
Future amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 25 years. First, the discount factor is 1.05 to the power of 25, which is 3.386355. Present value is $50,000 divided by 3.386355, which is $14,765.14. The discount is $50,000 minus $14,765.14, which is $35,234.86, or 70.5% of the future amount. After 25 years only 29.5% remains in today's money, so the business is effectively valuing a distant $50,000 at under $15,000 today.
Who this term suits for a business: A 25-year term suits a business doing succession or long-range reserve planning, where a sum is expected a quarter of a century away. At $14,765.14 today, a $50,000 sum in 25 years is a small present asset, so it should not support a large loan or purchase today without other income behind it.
FAQs
What is present value?
Present value is what a future sum is worth today after allowing for interest over time.
Is this business calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why does the discount reach $35,234.86 at 25 years?
Because the factor after 25 years is 3.386355. Dividing $50,000 by 3.386355 gives $14,765.14, so the discount is $35,234.86, or 70.5%. The longer the wait, the larger the share removed, and by 25 years the discount is more than twice the present value itself.
How can a business keep a 25-year valuation honest?
By stating the rate and the assumptions with it, and by reviewing the figure as rates change. A 25-year present value at a fixed 5% rate is a snapshot, not a promise. If the business's cost of money rises, $14,765.14 falls, and if the payment itself is uncertain, the true value is lower again.
Is $14,765.14 enough to plan a 25-year goal around?
On its own, no. It is a small present asset compared with a $50,000 future sum, so a 25-year plan needs nearer cash flows, savings, or income as well. Use this figure to show how little a distant sum is worth today, not as the whole funding plan.
