Business Loan Total Interest Calculator (30 Years)
Estimate total interest paid over a loan. This business version uses a 30-year planning term as its starting point.
In plain terms, the total interest is the extra cost of borrowing beyond the amount borrowed, and the total paid is the amount borrowed plus that interest over the full 30-year term.
Formula
Total interest equals monthly EMI times number of payments minus the principal.
How it works
A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.
Worked example
Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 30 years. The monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is 0.0054167, and the number of payments is 30 times 12, which is 360. Using the EMI formula, the monthly payment is $1,264.14. Over 360 payments the total paid is $455,088.98. Total interest is $455,088.98 minus $200,000, which is $255,088.98. That is 127.5% of the amount borrowed, so the business pays back more than 2.27 times the original loan.
Who this term suits for a business: A 30-year term does not suit an ordinary business loan. Its only honest use is as a payment floor for a property-backed borrowing: if even $1,264.14 a month is hard for the business, the loan amount itself needs to change, because stretching to 30 years cannot fix affordability without a $255,088.98 interest bill, and no ordinary business equipment lasts 30 years.
FAQs
Why does a longer loan cost more interest?
More payments mean interest is charged for longer, so total interest rises even if each payment is smaller.
Is this business calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Is a 30-year term normal for a business loan?
No, not for an ordinary business loan. Thirty-year terms are normal for mortgages, not for business equipment or working capital. A business lender offering 30 years is usually lending against property, and the $255,088.98 interest bill should be compared with renting the same property instead.
How can the $255,088.98 total interest bill be cut?
By borrowing less, choosing a shorter term, paying extra when profits allow (if the lender permits it without a large fee), or securing a lower rate. Each extra payment early in the loan cuts interest far more than the same payment made late, because interest is charged on the remaining balance.
What is a business trading when it chooses 30 years over 5 years?
It trades a lower monthly payment for a much larger total cost: the payment falls from $3,913.23 to $1,264.14, but total interest rises from $34,793.78 to $255,088.98, an increase of $220,295.20. That is the price of monthly comfort over 360 payments.
