Business Loan Total Interest Calculator (10 Years)

Estimate total interest paid over a loan. This business version uses a 10-year planning term as its starting point.

—

In plain terms, the total interest is the extra cost of borrowing beyond the amount borrowed, and the total paid is the amount borrowed plus that interest over the full 10-year term.

Formula

Total interest equals monthly EMI times number of payments minus the principal.

How it works

A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.

Worked example

Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 10 years. The monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is 0.0054167, and the number of payments is 10 times 12, which is 120. Using the EMI formula, the monthly payment is $2,270.96. Over 120 payments the total paid is $272,515.15. Total interest is $272,515.15 minus $200,000, which is $72,515.15. That is 36.3% of the amount borrowed, more than double the 5-year interest bill, because interest is charged for twice as long.

Who this term suits for a business: A 10-year term suits a business that needs a manageable payment without letting the interest bill run away, for example a small manufacturer spreading the cost of new equipment over its useful life, or a clinic fitting out treatment rooms it expects to use for a decade. The payment of $2,270.96 a month is far easier to carry than the 5-year payment, but the business still pays $72,515.15 in total interest, so the equipment should earn well above that cost over its life.

FAQs

Why does a longer loan cost more interest?
More payments mean interest is charged for longer, so total interest rises even if each payment is smaller.

Is this business calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why is a 10-year term a common middle choice for a business loan?
It balances a payment the business can carry with a total interest bill that is still controlled. At $2,270.96 a month and $72,515.15 in total interest, it is much easier on monthly cash flow than 5 years, without the very large interest bills of 25-year and longer terms.

How much more total interest does 10 years cost than 5 years?
On $200,000 at 6.5%, the 10-year loan costs $72,515.15 in total interest and the 5-year loan costs $34,793.78, so the 10-year term costs $37,721.37 more in interest. That extra cost buys a monthly payment that is $1,642.27 lower.

How should a business test whether $2,270.96 a month is affordable?
Test it against the lowest recent monthly revenue, after wages, rent, stock and tax, not against the best month. If the payment leaves no buffer for a slow quarter, the loan amount should be smaller or the term should be reconsidered before signing.
